3D Texture Painting In Procreate By Neil Blevins Created On: July 13th 2026 Updated On: July 13th 2026 Software: Procreate
3D Texture Painting is the process where you add texture to a 3d model
by painting directly on the 3d surface with a digital paint brush. This
is in contrast to painting on a 2d representation of the surface using
a technique such as UVs. Many pieces of 3d software have this 3D
Texture Painting capability (3dsmax, Blender), and many other pieces of
utility software exist to do the same thing (Substance Painter, Muxbox,
Mari).
Blender Example
Here's some notes:
Make a model in your 3d program of choice
make sure it has UVs.
Export as obj file, put on the cloud
Go to ipad, start procreate, hit Import from the gallery screen,
and import your obj file from the clouds.
Paint on the model as you would any 2d canvas. All brushes,
layers and filters work.
You can paint in 3d or 2d onto the texture map.
When finished, go back to the gallery. Select the file.
Hit Share, choose "PNG Textures"
Save to resulting zip file to the cloud
Open zip file on your computer, extract color png file
hook up that color tho the material in your 3d scene.
