As humankind extended its reach into nearby solar systems, the first of the artifacts were found. Their sizes and shapes were varied, some were the size of a football stadium, many were the size of small moons. Some were underground, some were found floating in the mists of gas giants. Each contained a single translucent orb at their core that emitted vast amounts of radiation. Many theories were given as to their existence: tools of a long dead interstellar race, the brains of a dormant alien AI, eggs for a space faring species waiting to hatch. As scientists explore and study the known artifacts, the more adventurous push out further to discover more. The artifacts became known as liths.
